Just a reminder for people on my flist that might not watch the Milliways Back Room anymore or have seen it on other people's journals:  they're cleaning out the cast list, and if you have characters that you want to be retired as opposed to deleted from the comm (the posts won't be deleted, but the characters will be opened up for apping), you need to head over here and comment before midnight tomorrow to have them retired.

I'm hopefully rebooting Jack anyway, so having the 24 pups opened for apps shouldn't cause a problem for me, though not sure about other pups.  Though I need to post in the back room about the reboot and work out how muns of certain pups and I will deal with it.  Mostly it'll be up to the other mun as I can work with whatever they want to do.

...Just realized that as the computer room is getting painted tomorrow and that's where the modem & router are, and all the computer stuff is getting unplugged, I probably won't be on the computer much in the next couple days.  Woes.

Have lots to write about from this weekend (good things!) but OMG tired and brain not working, so will save that for tomorrow when I've had some sleep.

Also not posting it tonight because too busy doing the OMG FLAIL about some fountain pen/ink geekery.   The Noodler's Ink company is a small company specializing in a wide variety of inks, and is well known to fountain pen geeks.  They not only do a *lot* of different colours (especially when you factor in the colours they only do for certain retailers, pen shows, etc.) but they also do a lot of different types of inks, including highlighter inks, invisible ink, the "polar" line (which freezes at a much lower temperature than regular ink) and their "bulletproof" (fraudproof) line.  They also sometimes try to recreate vintage inks.  Which is where my flail comes in.

So supposedly someone sent them an old bottle from when they worked on a classified government installation in the mid-1940s, and asked them if they could recreate the ink with modern materials.  The bottle had a very plain label on it which simply read: "US Army Corps of Engineers, LA NM BLK WF 43".

You can see where I'm going with this, right?

If this is 100% true (and I have no reason to doubt the owner of the company other than because this sounds like such a cool story I can't quite believe it), Noodler's has recreated ink that was used by the people working on the Manhattan Project.  Naturally the colour is called "Dark Matter" and has a photo of Robert Oppenheimer on the label. :D  Oh man, I need a bottle of this ink (especially as the scans I've seen seem to show it as a very nice, saturated black!).

They've also created a line of inks they've called their "V-Mail" line, made with vintage chemistry though the colours aren't what would have been used in the V-mail program from WW2.  The V-Mail program was an effort by the US Military to save weight and space in aircraft by photographing letters to and from the troops onto microfilm, flying the microfilm to a photo lab in the US or overseas and then blowing up the images and sending the letters on to their recipients.  Because they needed to be photographed and reduced so much, the inks used had to be pretty dark, and a few companies made special, dense inks that photographed well, in black or blue-black.  The bottle I saw in an article about it was labelled "Micro-Film Black".  The Noodler's line also incudes colours like "G.I. Green" and "Midway Blue" and another one I'll have to get based on scans: "North African Violet".

Of course the rest of my flailing is because Lamy has released the new Limited Edition colour of their Safari pen line and it's a bright pink. :D  Very girly and very inexpensive (but great writing!) pen,  I wants it.  It can wait for my vacation pay in July, though.

So I'm watching the Canadian show The Listener, which makes no bones about being in Toronto.  None of the characters have said "hey, we're in Toronto", but they show the CN Tower and there's a line about having the highest arson rate "in the area" except for Buffalo (which made me laugh because it's not a morning newscast in Buffalo if there isn't at least one fire to report).

So I'm watching and at one point they're looking at the record of an arsonist and they flash a map on Google Maps or Mapquest, saying the guy lives "just around the corner" from an apartment that blew up.  Now something about this map seems kinda hinky.  Probably because there's a numbered street on there (and Toronto doesn't have numbered streets in the downtown area at least) and...I don't know, I'm anal like that.  Luckily there are two high schools listed on the map: Holmes Jr HS and Davis Senior HS (which is also hinky as I know around here at least, they aren't called high schools, they're "secondary schools").

So I look them up.  They're in Davis, California.

...um, what?  You guys couldn't just grab a random section of GoogleMaps from Toronto?

I'm still pondering getting one.  Part of me is wondering what I'd do with it, but part of me is paranoid and wants a place to mirror my posts, just in case LJ does something stupid at some point.  I have 6+ years of my life on here, and I don't want to lose it or the comments.  Not that I've heard any recent news that might make me want to jump ship, but y'know, paranoid.

Is it sad that the first thing I thought on seeing Secret #4 on today's roleplaysecrets  was "Holy crap!  A  secret featuring Jack in a panfandom setting and it's not me!"

I know there are other people who play Jack (and I know one of them) but not really anyone that actively plays him somewhere.  Not that I've searched every LJ RP, but yeah.

(And yes I managed to find the journal and am reading the player's posts.  What, you expect me not to check and see if they kick my ass?)
